HPMS Remote Learning Message

Dear HP students and families,

We miss you at HP!  If you have not already done so, please log into Canvas today to watch a video from our staff.  All of us at HP miss seeing our students. We hope you are doing well and staying healthy, but we know many families are dealing with significant insecurities, job loss, and emotional stress. The district has created links to community resources here.

Remote Learning:

We are about to embark on more robust online learning opportunities together.  Students should have already received messages from teachers. Next week (April 6-10), students will see at least two postings from their teachers in Canvas, with optional and supplemental learning activities.  The following week (April 13-17), the activities will increase as we move into Phase 3 of Remote Learning as directed by the Oregon Department of Education.

This coming week, the main purpose is for students and their teachers to connect and become familiar with the technology.  We ask that all students log in by Monday so that we can see who is and is not able to access Canvas. For families who are needing assistance with access, please reach out to one of us so we can try to help you navigate the community resources for WIFI.

Being online for our learning is going to be different, but in many ways it will also be the same.  Students will still have access to their teachers to ask questions through times called Office Hours.  These are blocks of times when teachers will be available through a variety of formats to answer questions you may have.  Teachers will post information about timing and logistics of Office Hours on their Canvas pages.

Office Hours and Zoom:

Some of our teachers will provide times for students to connect via Zoom.  Zoom is an online meeting tool that is available on student Chromebooks. The purpose of Office Hours/individual/small group instruction is to provide your student more support academically and emotionally if needed.  Office Hours/individual/small group instruction is intended to be small groups by nature, but it is possible that there could be one-on-one interactions via Zoom.  If the Zoom conference necessitates a 1 on 1 conversation with your student, the meeting will be recorded for student and staff safety. If for any reason, you, as parents, or your student are uncomfortable with this, participation is optional. Communication via direct email is still available to ensure that your student is getting academic questions answered.

Zoom and Remote Learning Expectations:

During the regular school year, our students interact in the classroom daily. They see each other at their bests - getting an answer right, explaining a concept to a classmate, or being complimented for a job well done. They also see each other in their most vulnerable moments - getting an answer wrong, being snubbed by a friend, or even having a bad hair day. Our teachers work tirelessly every day to train students to respect and support each other in these moments. Our online learning platforms, including Zoom, will be no different.  We have high expectations for student conduct and peer interactions. Please review these with your child.

  • Please arrive to meetings a few minutes before the scheduled time. You can arrive to Office Hours any time in the window, but it will be harder for your teacher to find the time to help you towards the end of the session.
  • Maintain respect in speaking, listening, and chatting.
  • Use chat only if needed. Be professional. Use academic language. Stick to the learning target.
  • Devices should be fully charged or plugged in. Use earbuds or headphones if you can.
  • Be kind, patient, positive and present!
  • To protect student privacy, just like in regular class, it is never okay to record the session or post - with your Chromebook or any other device.
  • Only share video if you feel really comfortable with others seeing it. Otherwise, stop your video. You are responsible for anything on your feed screen.
  • If using video, be aware of your surroundings and try to keep your computer in one spot. It’s a good idea to pick up anything you don’t want seen. (Think dirty clothes!)
  • There will always be someone whose comments or opinions are frustrating to you. Posting about that via Zoom or other platforms is inappropriate and may qualify as harassment.
  • School rules still apply to remote learning. Referrals and consequences will absolutely result from mean or inappropriate online behavior, generally ranging from parent involvement to suspension of digital access.

Zoom/Remote Learning and Parent Involvement:
  • If you are working remotely during the pandemic, you might want to think about having your child work in the same room with you.
  • While your child is on Zoom or any other live chat, pop into the room. Your middle-schooler would probably appreciate you staying off camera, but stay and listen for a few minutes to learn how their online experience is going.
  • Parent volunteers in the classroom are required to keep all student information private, so if you hear comments from other students or questions that point to a specific level of comprehension, the expectation is that you don’t repeat those things.
  • Sit down a few times a week with your child to ask what the tasks are and the plan for getting them completed. Add things you would like them to do: instrumental practice, drills for a sport, organizing the pantry, cleaning the home, walking the dog, weeding the planters, fixing dinner, reading to a sibling, etc.

Items Left Behind - Paper and Pencil Needs

If any supplies are needed to access remote learning, please fill out the form below.  Supplies can be picked up Monday, April 6 between 10:30-12:00 and Wednesday, April 8 between 2:00-3:30.  Supplies will be on tables in the front of the school. Extra stacks of paper and bundles of pencils/pens will be available for families needing access to basic supplies. Please practice social distancing - six feet of distance between any member of your family and others - while gathering your supplies.

  • ¡Sea amable, paciente, positivo y presente!
